As we mark another Trans Day of Remembrance in these fraught, emotional times, our hearts and minds turn towards those we’ve lost in the ongoing struggle for transgender rights and acceptance. This year, we remember the hundreds of transgender individuals who faced the ultimate form of hate and intolerance – losing their lives to violence and prejudice for living as their true selves.

Recent statistics paint a harrowing picture: a significant rise in reported murders of transgender people worldwide, with a distressing majority being transgender women of colour. These numbers, however, only scratch the surface. Countless incidents go unreported, and many victims are misgendered and deadnamed in death, erasing their true identities even in their final moments.

But Trans Day of Remembrance is more than a day of mourning; it’s a clarion call for change. It’s a day to recommit ourselves to the fight for a world where being transgender is not a risk factor for violence or death. A world where every transgender person can live their truth safely and proudly. A world where diversity is celebrated, not feared. Today, as we remember those we’ve lost, let’s also ignite a new determination to dismantle the structures of hatred and bigotry. Let’s amplify transgender voices, advocate for inclusive policies, and educate others about transgender experiences and rights. Our collective action can transform this day of remembrance into a legacy of resilience and hope for the transgender community.

Together, let’s honour the memory of the fallen by fighting for the living. Remember, reflect, and act.
